Case study: Buying carbon

Pembina Institute shares learnings from MaRS’ agreement to purchase carbon dioxide removal credits.

On April 23, 2024, MaRS Discovery District, Canada’s largest urban innovation hub, announced it was purchasing  carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from five Canadian CDR developers.

According to CDR.fyi, the most comprehensive database for tracking credits, MaRS is one of the first Canadian charitable organizations to purchase carbon removal credits.

Recognizing the importance of such initiatives, the Pembina Institute, a Canadian think tank, developed an educational report in collaboration with MaRS. The report is meant to act as a resource guide for those looking to become buyers in the carbon market and support responsible CDR development in Canada.
